Generations Restaurant - Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort Lake Placid, New York

Chris Ericson, a local entrepreneur and resident of Lake Placid submitted the idea for the winning name “Generations” for the restaurant. Coincidentally Chris is also the BrewMaster of the famous Ubu™ Ale, a beer brewed locally and used in the Ubu™ Fondue – one of the most popular items on the “Generation’s” menu. The name is appropriate for a myriad for reasons: The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort is owned by the Holderied family and has 3 generations of the family working there together. The Golden Arrow is an extremely family friendly resort and has welcomed several generations of families that regularly visit the resort year after year. “Generations” is now open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The wine list is well balanced offering an excellent selection of domestic and international wines, many of which are organic and sustainable. In keeping with the sustainable philosophy of the resort, the menus feature many foods that are grown and raised locally. Generations is currently being evaluated by the Green Restaurant Association to further assist them in learning how to operate a sustainable restaurant. The dining room is decorated with warm colors, wood accents, a bamboo wood floor, a stone fireplace and features artwork & photography from regional artists. In the summer months, the outside deck of Generations showcases expansive views of the Golden Arrow’s Green Roof. In addition to providing fresh herbs for the restaurant, grants a beautiful ecological backdrop and views of Mirror Lake, Whiteface Mountain and the High Peaks.

The winning name of the bar “Straight Shot” was submitted by Rachel Hines and Tyler Jones of Chapel Hill, NC. Straight Shot offers an extensive wine and spirits program, and features many classic and custom cocktails all freshly made and perfectly balanced.

“The response to the naming contest for the restaurant and bar was much greater than we had anticipated. The evaluation process was harder than we had imagined, as so many great names were submitted,” said Jennifer Holderied, one of the owners of the resort. “We wanted to make sure that the chosen name bears some significance for the resort and will stand the test of time. Our goal for the menu is to keep it as local and fresh as possible. Living in the region we do, there are extensive offerings in each season that allows us the ability to showcase the many wonderful farms and products that are grown, raised and cultivated in New York’s Adirondack region. As a resort we work hard every day to operate as sustainably as possible. Doing the same thing at the restaurant is just a natural extension of that. We were lucky to find a management team that is as passionate about it as we are.” Jenn added.

Executive Chef David Hunt worked to create the menu along with the General Manager Mark Corr and the management team. The goal was to create a menu that was diverse in the menu offerings for each meal and reflect a balanced mix of price points along with a selection that is appealing to all age groups, and the international mix of patrons who visit the Golden Arrow and Lake Placid throughout the year.

Since beginning their Green Initiative in 2005, The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort has been a leader in creating environmental friendly programs, amongst hotels and resorts in New York State and nationally. The Resort’s green programs and practices have set a high standard for others in the lodging industry to follow. In 2008 they were awarded the Environmental Excellence Award from the New York State Department of Energy and Conservation and are the only hotel property to have ever won the award. In 2009 the Golden Arrow received the Good Earthkeeping Award from the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association.
