History
- 1955Â Winfried and Stefanie Holderied immigrated to the United States from southern Germany. They met in an English language class, they quickly got married and had 3 children, Christl, Peter, and Heidi.
- 1963Â brought the Holderieds to Lake Placid for the first time. They were so taken by the beauty of the Adirondacks that by 1964 they had moved here permanently.
- 1974Â The Holderieds bought the Golden Arrow Motor Inn from a local attorney, Ronald Urfirer. It consisted of only 36 rooms. The lobby was located on what is currently the second floor.
- 1976 – 1979Â were years of major growth for the hotel. The north wing, Health Spa & Alpine Mall were built. The restaurant, named the Country Kitchen at that time, was expanded and renovated. The Golden Arrow became part of the Best Western Franchise. Also, the Holdereids welcomed the baby of the family, Jenny.
- 1980Â Lake Placid hosted the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. The Golden Arrow was booked solid for 3 weeks. ABC used it as its headquarters. The town did not have enough commercial housing so, many local people housed athletic teams in their homes. The Holderieds welcomed the Austrian Ski Team into their home.
- 1985 – 1987Â The hotel expanded yet again! The south wing was added (which contained the first hotel rooms in Lake Placid to have real fireplaces), and the lobby level was raised to Main Street. Peter returned home from college to help Wini with construction and took over management of the restaurant with his wife Kim, renaming it Goldberries.
- 1986Â Heidi returned to Lake Placid to run the Health Spa. She eventually assumed the role of Director of Sales and then General Manager of the hotel. She and Peter built and opened Roomers Night Club.
- 1997Â Peter leased Goldberries to an outside party and took over as Head of the Maintenance Department. Having two children directly involved in the hotel gave Wini and Stefi the freedom to move to Hilton Head, SC during the winters.
- 2001Â brought Jenny and her husband Dave back to Lake Placid. Jenn assumed the role as Director of Marketing.
- 2002Â The Golden Arrow became a completely non-smoking resort.
- 2004Â The Holderieds purcahsed the neighboring property known as the Black Bear Restaurant with plans for future expansion.
- 2005Â The family decides it is time to take responsibility and really focus on running an environmentally friendly operation. With the help of Audubon International, they create goals and strategies for becoming a more earth-friendly resort.
- 2006Â The Golden Arrow ends its 26-year-long relationship with Best Western and becomes an independent property renamed the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort. Goldberries underwent major renovation and reopened as Charlie’s.
- 2007Â Noticing a growing trend of guests who have issues with allergies, the family converts the first floor north wing into an Allergen Free Floor. The rooms are equipped with bamboo floors, air-filters, dust mite covers, and leather furniture to reduce the effects of dust and other allergens.
- 2008Â The Holderieds take over management of the restaurant, bringing in new management and renaming it Generations.
- 2009Â The Golden Arrow became the first and only resort in the United States to achieve a Platinum rating (highest rating available) from Audubon International in their ‘Green Lodging Program.’
- 2012 Heidi decided to pursue a doctorate in Physical Therapy and retires from the Hotel. Jenny earns the title of “Big Schnitzel” and becomes GM. Also, the first of the third generation of Holderieds, Peter’s daughter Andréa came to work at the hotel full time as the Director of Beautification.
- 2017 Wini and Stephanie celebrate 60 years of marriage!
