Looking for a downhill skiing adventure? Visit Whiteface Mountain for the greatest vertical in the Northeast. Whiteface Mountain is just a short drive outside of town in Wilmington, New York. Not wanting to drive? Take the shuttle service that picks up and drops off at multiple stops throughout Lake Placid (including across the street from the Golden Arrow.)
Whiteface Mountain receives an average of 201” inches of snow yearly, getting over 210” last year! With 87 different trails there is something for everyone, no matter your skill level.
Not looking to ski but want to take in the views? Take a ride on the Cloudsplitter Gondola. The Gondola will take you from the Main Base Lodge to the top of Little Whiteface in fifteen minutes. At the top, an observation deck lets you take in the beauty of the Adirondacks. You’ll see Lake Placid and its namesake village, and the tallest peaks in New York State. You’ll also be able to see the ski jumps, Lake Champlain, and the Ausable River.
Is cross country skiing more your speed? Visit Mt. Van Hoevenberg for constant upgrades and world class grooming that make up trails fit for an Olympian.
Ski out to Josie’s Cabin for an authentic Adirondack experience. Food and hot drinks are served inside the cabin on weekends and for special events, plus s’more are available at the nearby fires.
Looking for something a little different? Check out Cascade Ski Center during a Full Moon – late night skiing meets bonfire party. Ski out to the bonfire, listen to live music, and enjoy some adult beverages under the full moon! Remember to dress warm and bring your headlamp! *These events are 21+
One of the most notable things about Lake Placid is the fact that it hosted two Winter Olympics. So when visiting, skating on the Olympic Oval is a must! The outdoor oval is rich in history and a memorable experience for everyone who takes a lap!

Skate for free – One of the coolest things about Lake Placid is the fact the Mirror Lake freezes over allowing for a multitude of activities. Skating around the lake is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. The village of Lake Placid often clears the snow around the lake to allow for smooth loops. You will also see many spots cleared off for a game of pond hockey.
Dog Sled rides are a favorite of many visiting Lake Placid. Just steps outside the Golden Arrow’s back door you can take a ride across Mirror Lake with Luna, Patches, and the rest of the pack for Lake Placid Dog Sledding. Pricing is $15 per person.

Looking for an on-ice adventure? Take a ride on the Toboggan Chute where toboggans are sent down ice covered chutes from a 30′ high converted ski jump trestle! Depending on weather conditions toboggans can travel over 1,000 feet once they reach the frozen lake surface. The toboggan chute usually opens around January, but is very weather dependent. They have opened as early as December 26, and as late as February. The ice needs to be 10-12 inches thick before they will open, so no worries on falling through! Pricing is $15 for adults and $10 for students and includes the toboggan.
