Guys' Getaway Things to do
For the Outdoor Adventurer
With over 2,000 miles of marked hiking trails, the Adirondacks offer some of the best hiking in the East. Whether you want to take on one of the 46 High Peaks (with elevations over 4,000 ft) or just go on a simple walk through the woods, there’s an option for everyone.
Looking for a short hike? Check out Mt. Jo, one of the most popular hikes in Lake Placid, for a good reason. You’ll get major high peak views for minimal effort. Mt. Jo offers two trails up/down, or can be hiked as a loop trail, which we recommend. The longer trail is a more gradual climb and better for new hikers, while the shorter trail is a much steeper climb. The two trails rejoin prior to the summit.
Want to tackle a High Peak? Try Big Slide Mountain. This is a moderately difficult hike over open rock and steep terrain, but the views of the Great Range, especially from The Brothers, can’t be beat. Parking is limited at the popular Garden parking area, which fills early in the warm months, so have a backup plan when setting out to hike Big Slide. A shuttle bus is often available during the busiest times of year. The best way to climb Big Slide is to make a 9.6-mile loop by going up the mountain via The Brothers — a scenic series of three smaller mountains — then returning by way of Johns Brook Valley. The best way to celebrate your hike is by stopping at Big Slide Brewery for a Big Slide IPA!
Regardless of your hiking choice, make sure you do your research and come prepared.
Looking for a little adrenaline boost, without the heavy lifting? Visit one of the Lake Placid Legacy Sites Olympic Venues.
Mt. Van Hoevenberg offers indoor rock climbing, a Bobsled Experience, and a Cliffside Coaster (the longest coaster in North America!)
*Note: Some activities might not be available in 2025 due to construction updates. Check their website for current hours and availability.
At the Olympic Jumping Complex, you can ride the gondola and elevator to the top of the 128-meter ski jump. Ride the Sky Flyer zipline back down as it follows the 100-meter ski jump, emulating the flight of ski jumping at speeds up to 30 miles per hour!
For the Sports Enthusiasts
The weather in September and October usually allows for fun on Mirror Lake. When you stay at the Golden Arrow, you’ll have access to complimentary kayaks, paddleboards, boats, and water bikes! (Availability may vary depending on how cold the lake is.)
Golf in Lake Placid is one of the rare pleasures of life. It is a short season, but it is nothing short of spectacular from start to finish. The golden colors of fall create a mesmerizing backdrop for some of the most well-maintained courses in New York. Stay at the Golden Arrow before the season ends and add on our anytime golf package with a round of golf at your choice of the Craigwood Golf Course, The Lake Placid Club, or the Whiteface Club & Resort Golf Club.
For the Libation Lovers
Lake Placid and its surrounding areas have become a hotspot for craft beer lovers, with a thriving and ever-expanding local brewery scene. Go on a brewery tour to explore the five local breweries (4 of which are within walking distance of the Golden Arrow!) We suggest starting at Big Slide (since you have to drive), then coming back into town and walking to the rest.
Big Slide Brewery & Public House: Low-key brewery & tap room offering small plates, pizza & Sunday Brunch, plus 10 rotating beers.
The Lake Placid Pub & Brewery: Offers bars & lakeside decks on three floors, plus a kids’ play area & tours of the brewery.
Raquette River Brewing Tasting Room: Opened in November of 2023, the Raquette River Tasting Room offers flights, tasting, and drafts, plus cans to go and merchandise. Find them in the Alpine Mall.
Prison City Brewing: Counter-service food & drinks. Rotating Prison City beer on tap & to-go, NY wine & cider, PCB merchandise, and snacks.”
The Boat Tasting Room: Boat-themed tasting room offering a variety of beer, wine, and cocktail flights, plus spirits such as whiskey and bourbon.
Coming in 2026: Meier’s Creek Lake Placid! “We’re hard at work creating a taproom and restaurant that reflects the character and charm of Lake Placid — a place where locals gather, visitors feel right at home, and every pint tells a story. Our expansion into the Adirondacks marks a new chapter for Meier’s Creek, and we can’t wait to share it with you.”
If you’re more into craft cocktails than craft beer, check out Top of the Park. Top of the Park is a Lake Placid bar specializing in the finest spirits from around the world. Accompanied by great food and a world-class view!
For the Competitive Crowd
Bring on the friendly competition at a local arcade or bowling alley, all located on Main Street and within walking distance of the Golden Arrow. Faizy’s Fun House offers three floors of fun. The Main Street level (second floor) has classic arcade games like Skeeball, basketball, Plinko, and grab machines. Head up to the third floor for more games and a self-pour tap house, or down to the first floor for indoor glow golf. The Penalty Box Arcade is a local family-owned redemption arcade that brings together the excitement of hockey and the thrill of classic arcade games. Big Z’s is home to 8 bowling lanes, a multi-sport simulator, a casual restaurant, and a full bar.
